Job description
Financial Controller
About Glenholme
Glenholme is a specialist healthcare provider supporting adults with learning disabilities, autism, and complex needs across 22 services nationwide. With over 700 staff and more than two decades of growth, we are a values-led organisation in an active phase of expansion — filling capacity, opening new services, and developing new sites. Growing the right services, in the right places, for the people who need them is central to our mission. Glenholme is backed by STAR Capital (since Jun-26), with a strong focus on growth, operational improvement and value creation.
The Role
Reporting directly to the CFO, the Financial Controller will own the day-to-day financial control environment and ensure the finance function is accurate, timely and reliable. The role has end-to-end responsibility for month-end, balance sheet integrity, statutory reporting, audit, cash flow and core finance processes, while leading and developing the finance team.
We are looking for someone hands-on when required, but equally focused on building strong processes and developing the team. The FC will work closely with the CFO, senior leadership and operational teams, with exposure to the Board, private equity investor, lenders, auditors and advisers.
Key Responsibilities
• Own day-to-day accounting operations, including AR and billing, AP, banking, fixed assets, accruals/prepayments, general ledger and balance sheet reconciliations, ensuring clear ownership and timely resolution of issues.
• Own cash-flow reporting and forecasting, including the 13-week cash flow and indirect cash flow for Actuals and Forecast, with a strong understanding of working capital, cash conversion and liquidity.
• Lead the annual budget and forecasting process, partnering with department heads to build and challenge assumptions.
• Produce accurate and timely monthly management accounts and Board packs, with clear and insightful variance commentary.
• Maintain strong financial controls, governance and balance sheet integrity, ensuring legal and regulatory finance filings are accurate and on time.
• Review monthly payroll and payroll journals.
• Review corporation tax computations and liaise with tax advisers and ensure timely submission;
• Review VAT returns and ensure accurate and timely submission.
• Support investor, bank and covenant reporting, including monitoring actual and forecast covenant headroom.
• Lead the year-end audit and statutory accounts process, ensuring audit schedules and technical accounting matters are well managed.
• Improve and streamline finance processes, systems and reporting, including appropriate use of automation and AI.
• Lead, coach and develop the finance team, creating clear accountability and supporting individual development.
• Partner with the wider business on financial performance, strategy and decision-making.
• Support the CFO with Board, investor and senior management reporting and analysis.
• Act as the technical accounting lead for Finance, providing guidance on complex or judgmental accounting matters.
The Person
Technical capability matters, but so does how you work with people. We are looking for someone approachable, low ego, collaborative and a nice person who builds trust across Finance and the wider business. They should be comfortable challenging constructively, while being supportive, open and genuinely pleasant to work with.
The right person will have a strong ownership mindset: reliable, accountable and willing to take issues through to resolution. They will be organised, calm under pressure, curious and comfortable getting into the detail without losing sight of the wider commercial picture. They will have a growth mindset, welcome feedback and enjoy developing others.
What We’re Looking For
• ACA, ACCA or equivalent qualified accountant with strong technical accounting skills.
• Proven Financial Controller or equivalent experience with genuine end-to-end ownership of core finance processes.
• Strong management accounts, balance sheet, budgeting, forecasting and cash-flow experience.
• Experience leading statutory accounts and external audits. Previous audit experience is advantageous but not essential.
• Strong team management, coaching and development skills.
• Reliable and accountable, with a strong ownership mindset and a track record of delivering to deadlines.
• Strong interpersonal and business-partnering skills, with the ability to build relationships and challenge constructively.
• Strong Excel and finance systems capability, with experience improving processes and reporting.
• Private equity, leveraged business, lender or covenant reporting experience would be advantageous.
• Healthcare, social care or multi-site experience would be beneficial but is not essential.
• High attention to detail and commercially minded, curious and improvement-focused, with an interest in using technology and AI effectively.
• Ideally you would have experience of Sage 200
What Success Looks Like
• Month-end, balance sheet and reporting are accurate, controlled and consistently delivered on time.
• Cash flow and forecasts are reliable and provide early visibility of risks and pressure points.
• Audit and statutory reporting are well planned and completed efficiently.
• The finance team has clear ownership, strong capability and appropriate development plans.
• The CFO and wider leadership team can rely on Finance to identify issues early, explain performance clearly and follow actions through.
• Finance processes become increasingly efficient and scalable as the business grows.
