Responsibilities

Need to haves:
• Strong, demonstrable experience building and maintaining production backend services,
delivering projects end-to-end with minimal oversight
• Solid commercial experience with Kotlin and/or PHP, and confidence working across both
• Experience designing, building and consuming APIs (REST and/or GraphQL)
• Good working knowledge of cloud infrastructure, ideally AWS
A strong grasp of software development practices, including automated testing, code review
and version control
• Comfortable using AI code assistants as part of a modern development workflow
• Able to understand our architecture well enough to make sound, independent
implementation decisions and address technical debt within your domain
• Comfortable working independently and asynchronously as part of a remote-first team,
taking a high degree of ownership over your work
• Proactively share knowledge, engage stakeholders across Product and Operations, and
contribute ideas and feedback in discovery discussions
• Experience mentoring or supporting more junior engineers, giving clear and structured
feedback
Nice to haves:
• Experience with PHP/Laravel and/or microservices architectures
• Experience designing and evolving GraphQL APIs
• Experience with AWS services (e.g. Lambda, ECS, RDS, SQS) and infrastructure-as-code
• Prior experience in fintech, lending, or other regulated industries
• Experience working in a scale-up or early-stage company where you’ve helped shape
engineering culture

Requirements

Role
We’re looking for a talented Software Engineer to join our engineering team remotely. You’ll work on the services and APIs that power Fluro’s lending platform: the systems behind our customers’ loans and financial products. Our backend is built on AWS, with services written in Kotlin and PHP, including the GraphQL backend that serves our mobile app. Sitting within the product and engineering team, you’ll collaborate closely with other backend engineers, our mobile developers and product managers to deliver a secure, reliable and scalable platform.
This is an Engineer II (Level 3) role.
You’ll deliver work without supervision from senior team members, taking full ownership of well-scoped projects end-to-end – from gathering requirements through to validating outcomes. You’ll make sound technical decisions within your domain, balance delivery against long-term sustainability, and support the growth of more junior colleagues.
• Design, build, and maintain backend services and APIs on AWS using Kotlin and PHP,
including our GraphQL mobile backend
• Take full ownership of the delivery of projects end-to-end, independently gathering
requirements, proposing solutions, and validating outcomes
• Deliver moderately complex, scalable and maintainable solutions, balancing short-term
delivery needs with long-term technical sustainability
• Integrate backend services with internal systems and third-party providers, including
payment providers, SMS services, address lookup and financial services / credit data
providers
• Implement and maintain secure authentication and data-handling flows, compliant with best
practices for financial applications
• Design testable, repeatable solutions, drawing on past experience to critically assess
whether outputs meet the intended outcome and researching new approaches where
needed
• Take accountability for the quality, efficiency and long-term impact of your work, proactively
identifying and addressing technical debt
• Build effective relationships across teams and functions, engaging proactively with
stakeholders including Product and Operations to align on solutions and manage risks and
issues independently
• Communicate technical decisions and trade-offs clearly to both technical and non-technical
audiences, contributing ideas and feedback in discovery discussions and championing
technical excellence pragmatically
• Mentor junior colleagues and new joiners, giving structured feedback and actively
supporting their growth
