Electronics Engineer (Cambridge, ENG)
Job description
A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an Electronics Engineer to join an established engineering team in Cambridge, playing a key role in bringing new PCB designs to life, developing test solutions and ensuring products meet the highest standards of performance and reliability.
This is a hands-on position covering the full engineering lifecycle, from design verification and test development through to production support and investigating field-returned products. You'll work closely with Design, Test, Manufacturing and Quality teams, using your knowledge of analogue, digital, embedded and power electronics to solve technical challenges and continuously improve product quality.
Key Responsibilities:
· Developing and improving verification and validation strategies to ensure products meet functional, performance, reliability and customer requirements
· Creating and maintaining test plans, procedures and acceptance criteria, ensuring they are aligned with design specifications
· Defining test requirements to maximise PCB assembly test coverage and improve fault detection
· Designing, building and commissioning test equipment, fixtures and automated test solutions for verification, qualification and production
· Using scripting, automation and data analysis to improve test efficiency and repeatability
· Producing technical reports detailing test results, conclusions, recommendations and PASS/FAIL status
· Carrying out component-level fault-finding on complex electronic assemblies, including FPGA, embedded processor, analogue, digital and power electronic systems
· Leading root cause investigations using methods such as 8D and 5 Whys, implementing corrective and preventative actions
· Investigating recurring and intermittent failures, identifying trends and recommending improvements
· Supporting production, quality and manufacturing teams with technical issues and helping maintain delivery commitments
· Supporting new product introduction, ensuring effective test coverage and a successful transfer into manufacturing
· Creating and maintaining technical documentation covering test procedures, fault-finding, rework instructions and engineering changes
· Working with Design, Test, Manufacturing and Quality teams to improve testability, manufacturability and long-term product reliability
· Identifying technical risks, taking ownership of issues and contributing to continuous improvement across engineering processes
The ideal candidate would have:
· An HNC, HND, degree or higher qualification in Electronic Engineering or a related discipline
· At least 3 years' experience in an electronics design, product development, test or manufacturing environment
· A strong understanding of analogue, digital, power and embedded electronic systems
· Experience interpreting complex electronic schematics and diagnosing faults at component level
· Experience with root cause investigation methods such as 8D and 5 Whys
· Good knowledge of PCB and PCBA manufacturing processes, including Design for Manufacture (DFM) and Design for Test (DFT)
· Experience using scripting, automation or data analysis tools to improve engineering processes
The ideal candidate must have:
· Hands-on experience with electronic test equipment, including oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, power supplies, spectrum analysers, logic analysers and function generators
· Practical soldering, PCB modification, prototype assembly, rework and repair skills
· The ability to develop test plans, procedures and acceptance criteria, with a focus on accuracy and reliability
· A structured, evidence-based approach to fault-finding and problem-solving
· Strong communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with design teams, manufacturing, suppliers and customers
· Good organisation skills, with the ability to manage multiple activities and meet agreed deadlines
· A proactive approach, taking ownership of technical challenges and driving issues through to completion
· A positive, adaptable attitude and willingness to learn new technologies
